All religion is a belief or a worship with or for something.
But what religion does nowadays is hide from that, it doesn't say There is a God or
a power. It says, "Here, repeat this," or "Here, take this" and always finishes with:
"And you will be healed."

But you will not be healed.
This is real, this is how it works
in real life.
In real life, you struggle and you suffer and you cannot
escape pain or fear:
in real life there is you and there is everything else and
there is whatever you make.
And religion denies that: they deny that this is just
another thing - and it may be
the most important thing, do not
misunderstand, but
that does not mean it is not
just another thing in this world.

They make it words that can be mumbled by an unintelligable crowd at seven in the morning.
Things to be clapped to.
Things to be cheered for and not to.
People to pat you on the back not carry you.

They take the Magic out of it:
They take the power out of it.

1. Annoying FIRST ACT: trite and awful. Full of
2. Stereotypes. Stereotypical attitude. Stereotypical dialogue.
3. Virgin (see end) is tied into it in some mythical way - related to, causes, or, at least, is mainly stalked by Dark Presences.
4. Teenagers are dumb. All teenagers have rampant sex EVERYWHERE ... while drinking. Or stoned. While somewhere they aren't supposed to be. And they're dumb. They're really dumb. So they die. 'Cause they're dumb. (And 'cause they defie the social norms and all, most, horror movies do is promote the social norms.)
5. There is some weirdo who knows everything about it (for an example in a good movie, see Quint or ... that first Andriod in Alien) - sometimes good, sometimes bad - normally related in some way to Virgin or Virgin's love interest.
6. Cult/Pagan symbol or book or ritual spawns it.
(6a. Crappy cinematography - OR REALLY REALLY good cinematography. - Either way, very interesting.)
7. Bad guy can sometimes be hiding under main people's noses, though not always. For example: Godsend and Identity.
8. Large group of people, slaughtered mercilessly.
9. An odd visual style - instantly recognizeable. Normally oversaturated, highlighting the darks and lights. (As is the job of the horror film anyway.)
10. Bad guys are ugly or disgusting or something of that sort. (Again, with promoting the social norms.)
11. Technology is bad. Except when it's good (but then it's normally generic technology; and even then it normally ends up being bad).
12. Psychic powers or something verging upon them - a mental/emotional link - between the Virgin and the Dark Presence. (See Harry Potter. [Also: This establishes them as the ego and id, respectively.]
13. Innocence is safe - hence the reason the virgin doesn't die. (Although, wonderfully, some movies shoot this stereotype right in the face; see Planet Terror.)
[Selma Blair is hot - just thought that should be put out there - doesn't quite fit. But she is.]
15. Occur around some event - festival, holiday. (See Halloween, The Fog and The Wicker Man.)
(16. Stranger in a strange land - again, showing that what isn't us is bad. To quote: We don't like what we don't understand / In fact, it scares us; and this monster is mysterious indeed.)
17. Awkward love triangles.
18. Libraries know ALL. If an ancient demon curse was put on the town, and all records of it were burned, there is a copy in the library - if you look deep enough. Knowing a kindly librarian (who knows EVERYTHING about EVERYTHING, especially the local town) is helpful.
19.
20. Teenagers are, apparently, after a quick scream and stuttered breath, completely able to cope with finding the body of their dead friend, one they've known for years, gruesomely murdered - torn apart, eyes ripped out, blood and guts and feces and flesh all over. They are, in fact, inquesitive, and peer closer, moving the disgusting parts aside to find the answer. Instead of, ya know, puking and crying and just generally acting the way a person would under those circumstances in.
21. Small county cop knows all, is the baddest ass of them all. (See - every Stephen King movie ever.)
22. No matter how much weird shit has happened (whether they've seen demons, murders), at some point, someone will always doubt the Virgin when she finds the final key that will alert them to the danger - most likely her 'love interest'.

(More commonly know/recognized:)
- Black guy dies first
- Virgin is left at the end - a girl. (More in depth, typically relies on partner/those about her, 'til they are gone and then draws strength from herself - the one that was there all along - and fights back [normally with a phallic object of some sort - of course, all weapons are phallic - taking the sexual power away from the male.)
- Bad guy dies.
- Bad guy dies / Another bad guy is revealed (typically a partner) OR There is some essence of darkness that comes back/They find out they cannot escape from it.
- Men are MEN! and women are women. (Yes - you guessed it: social norms.)
- Dark is bad. You die in it.
- Awful acting from B-Movie actors (sometimes television stars, such as The Fog)
- Sex. Not always necessarily leading to death; and not always with side characters.
- Gang up at the end. Multiple storylines, if there are any (and if they could even be called that), converge at the end.
- Vengeful ghosts/zombies/ spurned thingies.

For more on the theory of Horror, read "Danse Macabre" by Stephen King, and watch Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon.
